{"id":102,"date":"2022-02-04T07:04:40","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T22:04:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/?p=102"},"modified":"2022-02-13T12:19:36","modified_gmt":"2022-02-13T03:19:36","slug":"post-102","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/txy-diagram\/","title":{"rendered":"Txy diagram\uff1aRelationship diagram of temperature, liquid and gas phases"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Outline<\/h2>\r\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>A graph that shows the relationship between the liquid phase composition x, gas phase composition y, and temperature T for two components at a constant pressure is called a Txy diagram.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Txy1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"365\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-110 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Txy1.png 400w, https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Txy1-300x274.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>As shown in the above figure, the Txy diagram is a graph in which temperature T is plotted on the vertical axis and liquid phase composition x and gas phase composition y are plotted on the horizontal axis.<\/p>\r\n<p>The line at the bottom of the figure is called the boiling point curve, and it represents the temperature at which the mixture begins to evaporate.<\/p>\r\n<p>The upper line in the figure is called the dew point curve, and it represents the temperature at which the gas mixture begins to condense.<\/p>\r\n<p>In general, lower temperatures make it easier for substances to condense into liquids, while higher temperatures make it easier for them to evaporate and become gases.<\/p>\r\n<p>Therefore, point A is below the boiling point curve, so it is in the liquid state.<\/p>\r\n<p>The temperature is raised from point A, and when it reaches point B, the liquid begins to evaporate.<\/p>\r\n<p>This point B is the boiling point of the mixture at that temperature, pressure, and composition.<\/p>\r\n<p>When the temperature is further increased to reach point C, a mixture of liquid and gas is formed.<\/p>\r\n<p>It follows the principle of leverage to determine what composition separates a liquid from a gas.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the above figure, the liquid phase composition is at point C&#8217; and the gas phase composition is at point C&#8221;.<\/p>\r\n<p>When the temperature is increased further and reaches point D, the liquid is completely finished evaporating.<\/p>\r\n<p>This point D is the dew point of the mixture at the temperature, pressure, and composition.<\/p>\r\n<p>Thus, there is a close relationship between temperature and the state of the mixture.<\/p>\r\n<p>Since distillation columns are generally operated at constant pressure, the Txy diagram makes it easy to consider the method of operation.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph {\"align\":\"center\"} \/-->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading -->\r\n<h2>Checking the characteristics of vapor-liquid equilibrium on a Txy diagram<\/h2>\r\n<p>The characteristics of vapor-liquid equilibrium can be checked in the form of a Txy diagram.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Azeotropy<\/h3>\r\n<p>A two-component system with an azeotropic point can be easily identified by checking the Txy diagram.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Minimum azeotropy<\/h4>\r\n<p>There are two types of azeotropes, but the system that shows the minimum azeotropy is by far the most common.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Txy2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"365\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-111 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Txy2.png 397w, https:\/\/chemical-engineering-review.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/02\/Txy2-300x276.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 397px) 100vw, 397px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The above graph shows the Txy diagram for the two-component system of ethanol and benzene.<\/p>\r\n<p>The minimum azeotrope is characterized by an azeotropic point that is lower than the boiling point of the pure substance of each component.<\/p>\r\n<p>This means that it can be boiled at a lower temperature and turned into a gas. If used properly, it can reduce the energy spent on distillation and separation.<\/p>\r\n<p>For this reason, there are distillation methods that dare to add a third component to the distillate to make it azeotropic.
